CLASSICALLY, FAITHFULLY HOMESCHOOLING 4 BOYS

Bring Medieval History to Life with “Warfare by Duct Tape”

Warfare by DuctTape by sproutingtadpoles.comI recently discovered the best books, call Warfare by Duct Tape. If you have a child that plays with pretend swords and thinks he is a knight-in-training, as mine do, then you will enjoy these books. If you are studying the middle ages, these books will help bring the medieval times to life. And they are a great work out for kids, mine fell asleep within minutes of lying down each night after their battles!

I got the Knight’s Book as part of the Boys’s Bundle in the Build Your Bundle Sale and purchased all of the supplies over the weekend. We then made swords, shields and daggers. I was planning on making tunics, leg armor and helmets but the boys were super anxious to play and wouldn’t wait on me. Because I am the one that takes the pictures and video’s, those pieces will have to wait a few days.

I printed out the instructions for the items we were making and we split into sections – my daughter made shields, my husband made swords and I was supposed to make helmets but I ended up running around grabbing this and that for whomever needed something.  The older boys made their own swords with dad assisting and my daughter did a great job designing the shields with perfectly aligned edges.Warfare by DuctTape by sproutingtadpoles.com

I can promise you we will be making more weapons and armor as the boys are already planning and strategizing the next battle! My husband is also planning to build some sort of castle / fort structure with them when we return from vacation. Once that is complete, I will share pictures of how we did it and the final outcome. But don’t expect anything fancy schmancy, it will most likely be made from scraps of wood and materials found here and there or scavenged from my dad 🙂

Here are some pictures of them playing. You can see how much they enjoyed this.

Here are my thoughts on these books:

• When we started making the items, the entire family came together and had so much fun just making them! I was amazed at the team work, no fighting or yelling, just helping and suggesting. It was great!

• It is in a man’s nature to be competitive and protective, so if you throw in a weapon or two, it’s go time! I really like and appreciate that the authors of these books incorporate safe and honorable warfare. They include a “Rules of Warfare”, which has a knights code of conduct and honor that I read to the boys before they started playing. Basically, if you get hit, you can’t use those limbs and you must be fair about it. Don’t cheat, don’t be sneaky, or just play to win, play to have fun! It was hilarious seeing the boys limp around with one leg or only using one arm to swing the sword because a limb was hit and couldn’t be used. And sometimes they even had to walk on their knees because both legs got hit! Funny!

• The battling was so much fun for the kids, they played all day Saturday and Sunday and for once, we had no arguments or “real” fighting between them. They played and laughed and got a great workout. The older ones were careful with the little ones, no one got hurt as the pipes are well insulated and they learn how to use those shields pretty quick. And boy are my little ones tough! They jumped right in with their older siblings and battled just as hard! My 4yo “died” every 10 minutes or so by flopping down on the ground with a “ughh” sound. It was hilarious to watch him!

• I loved this book, my husband loved it, my kids loved it. I think it was a win-win for the whole family. I am already looking at the other books, especially the Egypt book, since we are studying Ancient History this fall.  Watch for my review on that one 🙂

This particular book, the Knights Book, was in the bundle I got at the Build Your Bundle Sale, which was the Boys Bundle, but you can also get it in the Secular Bundle. The Bundle sale ends tonight so if you want to get in on these awesome bundle deals, today is the last chance!

This is the Boys Bundle and you can click-through the links to find out more about the Warfare by Duct Tape books.

Celebrating Manhood: A Rite of Passage Guide – Retail $14.95

His voice deepens. Soft whiskers sprout above his upper lip. That sweet baby boy you once held in your arms is becoming a man.

How will you celebrate?

“When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways” (1 Corin. 13:11.)

Extensive research asserts the importance of acknowledging a young man’s entry into adulthood. However, most of Western culture does not mark the transition from boyhood to manhood in any meaningful way. Sadly, an important opportunity is often lost.

Is there a simple way to celebrate this significant milestone?
Celebrating Manhood is a blueprint for hosting a special evening that will acknowledge your son as an adult and welcome him into the world of men.

If you’re a mom who wants to celebrate her son’s journey into manhood—but recognizes he needs men to mark the moment, be encouraged! Celebrating Manhood shows you how!

Of Knights and Fair Maidens – Retail $5.95

Jeff and Danielle Myers were determined to do things differently. So, before the era of “True Love Waits” or the writing of I Kissed Dating Goodbye, they interviewed married couples to discover the keys to a successful courtship.
